Then they denied him; then there seized them the punishment of the Day of Shadow; it was the punishment of a tremendous day.

Then they branded him a liar, whereupon the chastisement of the Day of Canopy overtook them.* It was the chastisement of a very awesome day.
They disbelieved him and refused credence to Our message wherefore were they seized with a wave of suffocating heat followed by a cumulus which overshadowed them and gave them a rainbow of hope of relief. But it was a joy in which they could not rejoice. It spoke thunder and reduced them to a useless form. It was indeed a torment that befell them on a momentous day.
Thus they rejected him and, consequently, a Canopy (out of which they were being bombarded, as they has asked for) was sent for their punishment. It was an awesome day, an awesome punishment.
But they belied him, so the torment of the day of shadow (a gloomy cloud) seized them. Indeed that was the torment of a Great Day.
But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.
So they rejected him, and ˹so˺ were overtaken by the torment of the day of the ˹deadly˺ cloud. That was really a torment of a tremendous day.
Thus they rejected him, so they were seized by the torment of the Day of Canopy. Indeed it was the punishment of a terrible day.
They called him a liar, and so the torment of the Day of Shadow came upon them- it was the torment of a terrible day.
But they cried him lies; then there seized them the chastisement of the Day of Shadow; assuredly it was the chastisement of a dreadful day.

Said he, "My Lord knows best what you do!"
Yet they cried him lies; then the torment of the Day of the Overshadowing took them (away); surely it was the torment of a Tremendous Day.
And they charged him with falsehood: Wherefore the punishment of the day of the shadowing cloud overtook them; and this was the punishment of a grievous day.
But they denied him. Then the punishment of a day of great sorrow seized them, indeed that was the penalty of a Great Day.
Yet they cried him lies, so the punishment of the gloomy day with dark overshadowing clouds overtook them; it was indeed the punishment of an awful day.
So they impugned him, and then they were overtaken by the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud. It was indeed the punishment of a tremendous day.
