80. Surah 'Abasa
He frowned

In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful.

Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

He frowned and turned away

AAabasa watawalla

That the blind man came to him.

An jaahu al-aAAma

And what can make thee know — he might purify himself,

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

Or take heed, and the reminder benefit him?

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra

As for him who is self-sufficient:

Amma mani istaghna

To him thou attendest,

Faanta lahu tasadda

But not upon thee is it if he does not purify himself.

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

And as for him who comes to thee, striving

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

And in fear:

Wahuwa yakhsha

From him thou art distracted.

Faanta AAanhu talahha

No, indeed! It is a reminder,

Kalla innaha tathkira

So whoso wills might remember it,

Faman shaa thakarah

In honoured pages,

Fee suhufin mukarrama

Exalted and purified,

MarfooAAatin mutahhara

By the hands of scribes

Bi-aydee safara

Noble and virtuous.

Kiramin barara

Damned be man! How denying he is!

Qutila al-insanu ma akfarah

From what did He create him?

Min ayyi shay-in khalaqah

From a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him;

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah

Then He made the path easy for him;

Thumma assabeela yassarah

Then He gives him death and buries him;

Thumma amatahu faaqbarah

Then, when He wills, He resurrects him.

Thumma itha shaa ansharah

No, indeed! He has not accomplished what He commanded him.

Kalla lamma yaqdi maamarah

So let man look at his food: —

Falyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamih

That We poured water in showers;

Anna sababna almaasabba

Then We split the earth in cracks,

Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqa

And We caused to grow therein grain,

Faanbatna feeha habba

And grapes, and herbage,

WaAAinaban waqadba

And olives, and date-palms,

Wazaytoonan wanakhla

And gardens dense with foliage,

Wahada-iqa ghulba

And fruits, and grass,

Wafakihatan waabba

As enjoyment for you and your cattle.

MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum

Then when there comes the Blast:

Fa-itha jaati assakhkha

The day a man will flee from his brother,

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheeh

And his mother, and his father,

Waommihi waabeeh

And his consort, and his sons,

Wasahibatihi wabaneeh

Every man of them, that day, will have an involvement to suffice him.

Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha/nun yughneeh

Faces, that day, will be bright,

Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfira

Laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings.

Dahikatun mustabshira

And faces, that day, upon them will be dust,

Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabara

Blackness will cover them;

Tarhaquha qatara

It is they who are the deniers, the immoral.

Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajara
